Brazil booked their place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after coming from behind to defeat Japan 2-1 in a dramatic knockout clash on Monday.
Japan stunned the five-time world champions in the 29th minute when Kaishu Sano capitalised on a midfield turnover, raced clear of the Brazilian defence and calmly slotted past the goalkeeper to give the Asian side a deserved lead.
Brazil struggled to break down Japan’s disciplined defence before Carlo Ancelotti’s tactical changes sparked a second-half revival.

The equaliser arrived in the 56th minute as veteran midfielder Casemiro powered home a header from Gabriel Magalhães’ cross to restore parity.
With extra time looming, Brazil continued to press for a winner. Their persistence paid off in the fifth minute of stoppage time when Bruno Guimarães threaded a precise pass into Gabriel Martinelli, who kept his composure to fire past goalkeeper Zion Suzuki and complete a dramatic comeback.
The victory sends Brazil into the Round of 16, where they will face the winner of Tuesday’s match between Ivory Coast and Norway.
Japan’s spirited display earned widespread praise despite the defeat. The Samurai Blue came close to recording their first-ever World Cup knockout victory but were ultimately undone by Brazil’s experience and late surge.
For Brazil, the win keeps alive their quest for a record-extending sixth World Cup title, although the performance exposed areas Ancelotti’s side will need to improve as the tournament enters its decisive stages.
