Argentina began their FIFA World Cup title defence in emphatic fashion with a commanding 3-0 victory over Algeria in their Group J opener.
Lionel Messi stole the show in Kansas City, scoring all three goals to hand La Albiceleste a perfect start to their campaign. The Argentine captain opened the scoring in the first half before adding two more after the break to complete a memorable hat-trick.

The performance was historic for Messi, who equalled Miroslav Klose’s all-time men’s World Cup scoring record of 16 goals. The 39-year-old also marked his 200th international appearance for Argentina in style, further cementing his legendary status.
Defending champions Argentina controlled much of the contest and rarely looked troubled by the Algerian side, who struggled to create clear-cut opportunities despite moments of determination.
The result puts Argentina in a strong position in Group J ahead of their next fixture against Austria, while Algeria will now look to bounce back when they face Jordan in a crucial encounter.
For Argentina, it was the perfect start. For Messi, it was another night of history.
