INEC Seeks Stronger UN Support for Credible Elections

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Joash Amupitan (SAN), has called for stronger collaboration with the United Nations to enhance the credibility, transparency and inclusiveness of elections in Nigeria.

Speaking in Abuja during a meeting with top UN officials, including representatives of the United Nations Development Programme, Amupitan said INEC was committed to improving every election it conducts.

He highlighted reforms such as upgrades to the Results Viewing Portal (IReV) and efforts to clean up the voters’ register by removing deceased and duplicate entries. He also sought expanded UNDP support for voter education to address apathy and boost public trust.

UN officials reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Nigeria’s democratic process ahead of upcoming governorship polls and the 2027 general election.
