Oyo Assembly Demands Stronger School Security After Student Abductions

The Oyo State House of Assembly has called for stronger security measures in public and private schools following the recent abduction of students and teachers at Community High School, Esiele, and L.A. Primary School, Yawota, in Oriire Local Government Area.

The resolution followed a motion sponsored by Oluwafemi Oluwafowokanmi, representing Ibadan South West Constituency II, who warned that schools were increasingly becoming targets of kidnapping, vandalism, cult-related violence and other criminal activities.

The Assembly urged the state government to deploy personnel of the Amotekun Corps, the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to schools, particularly those in rural communities, border areas and locations near forest reserves.

Lawmakers also called for comprehensive security audits of public schools, the establishment of a School Security Initiative, and the provision of emergency alert systems, communication equipment and other security infrastructure.

The House further recommended the enforcement of minimum security standards, including perimeter fencing, controlled access points and adequate lighting, while advocating public awareness campaigns under the “See Something, Say Something” initiative.

In addition, the Assembly urged the creation of emergency response units across education zones and the inclusion of security education and safety drills in school curricula.

During deliberations, members noted that the current strength of about 2,500 Amotekun personnel may be insufficient to secure all schools in the state and recommended the recruitment of additional security operatives, including trained local hunters and community-based security personnel.

The lawmakers also commended Governor Seyi Makinde for his continued support for security agencies and efforts to safeguard lives and property.
