Delta killing: IGP orders dismissal, prosecution of officer over fatal shooting

The Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has approved the immediate dismissal and prosecution of ASP Nuhu Usman, the officer implicated in the fatal shooting in Effurun, Delta State.

The development marks a swift escalation in the police response to the April 26, 2026 incident, which sparked outrage after reports emerged that the victim was shot during an operation in Effurun.

In a statement issued Tuesday evening, Force spokesperson DCP Anthony Placid said all officers connected to the incident had been withdrawn from the Delta State Command and transferred to Force Headquarters, Abuja, for accelerated disciplinary action.

According to the statement, the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC) and other internal review bodies concluded investigations and found the principal officer culpable.

The police said findings showed that ASP Usman acted in gross violation of Force Order 237 and other regulations guiding the use of firearms.

The statement partly read: “Findings established unequivocally that the principal officer, ASP Nuhu Usman, acted in gross violation of Force Order 237 and other extant regulations governing the use of firearms. His actions were unlawful, unprofessional, and a clear betrayal of the oath to protect life and uphold the law.

“Consequently, the FDC has recommended the immediate dismissal of ASP Nuhu Usman and other officers found culpable. The Inspector-General of Police has approved the recommendations and forwarded same to the Police Service Commission for ratification in line with due process.”

The Force also confirmed that after administrative procedures are completed, the officers involved will be handed over to the appropriate judicial authorities for prosecution over their roles in the extra-judicial killing.

The latest action comes hours after the police initially assured the public that disciplinary measures would be taken over the controversial shooting.
