Oyo School Kidnappings: Muslims Denounce Sharia Demand, Experts Differ on Response

The Muslim community in Oyo State has distanced itself from the Sharia-related demands reportedly made by terrorists holding teachers and pupils abducted from schools in Oriire Local Government Area, insisting the criminals do not represent Islam.

In a statement signed by its leaders, the group described the kidnappings and associated demands as criminal acts that contradict Islamic teachings, stressing that Islam promotes peace, justice and the protection of human life.

The reaction came as public and private schools across Oyo State’s 33 local government areas shut down in solidarity with the abducted victims. Teachers’ unions and school proprietors directed pupils to stay home pending their safe release.

The abductors, who attacked three schools in Esinele, Yawota and Alawusa communities on May 15, reportedly demanded ransom, two Hilux vehicles, the release of detained terrorist commanders and the implementation of Sharia-related law.

A traditional ruler in one of the affected communities appealed to the government to secure the release of the victims, while the Oyo State Government declined to disclose details of any ongoing negotiations, saying public discussion could jeopardise rescue efforts.

Security experts offered differing views on the government’s next steps. Some warned that paying ransom or releasing terrorist leaders could embolden criminal groups and encourage future kidnappings, while others urged authorities to first obtain proof that the victims remain alive before making any decision.

Analysts generally agreed that intelligence-led rescue operations should remain the priority, with several cautioning that concessions to terrorists could have serious long-term security consequences.
