The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has impounded more than 30 vehicles as it commenced enforcement of restrictions on tinted vehicles, concealed number plates, and improperly registered vehicles across Abuja.
Speaking on Friday, the FCT Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Sanusi, said the operation was aimed at curbing crimes such as one-chance robberies, kidnappings, and other violent offences often linked to the use of tinted vehicles.
According to him, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, authorised the enforcement following intelligence reports indicating that criminals frequently use tinted windows and concealed number plates to evade detection.
Sanusi said the exercise was designed to deny criminals the anonymity they exploit while assuring residents that law-abiding citizens were not the target of the operation.
He disclosed that more than 30 vehicles had already been seized for operating with tinted glasses, obscured number plates, or without proper registration. Owners and operators of the affected vehicles, he added, would be prosecuted under relevant federal laws and the FCT Road Transport Regulations Act, 2023.
The police commissioner urged residents to support the exercise by remaining vigilant and reporting suspicious persons, vehicles, and activities to security agencies.
The enforcement drive comes amid lingering uncertainty over the status of the Nigeria Police Force’s tinted glass permit policy. The force had suspended nationwide enforcement of the policy on January 1, 2026, following an interim court order, despite earlier plans to resume implementation from January 2. It remains unclear whether the court order has been lifted or the suspension remains in force.
