Police Confirm Disciplinary Action as Officer Faces Trial Over Fatal Effurun Shooting

The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed disciplinary proceedings against an officer involved in the fatal shooting of a suspect, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun, Delta State.

According to an official statement issued by Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, the incident occurred on 26 April 2026 during an operation by operatives of the Effurun Area Command.

Preliminary findings indicate that police officers responded to intelligence from the Benin Motor Park along the Warri–Sapele Expressway, where a suspect had reportedly been apprehended by members of a transport union while allegedly attempting to move a parcel said to contain a Beretta pistol with four rounds of ammunition.

The situation, however, escalated during an attempt to take the suspect into lawful custody. The team leader, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nuhu Usman, was said to have discharged his firearm in violation of established operational guidelines, resulting in the death of the suspect.

The Police High Command has ordered the immediate transfer of ASP Usman and members of his team to Force Headquarters in Abuja, where they are expected to appear before the Force Disciplinary Committee for summary proceedings and possible prosecution.

The Inspector-General of Police, according to the statement, expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and assured that justice would be pursued in line with the law.

The Force reiterated its stance against unlawful use of firearms and abuse of authority, stressing a zero-tolerance policy for extrajudicial conduct and actions capable of eroding public trust.

The case is now expected to proceed through internal disciplinary channels alongside potential criminal prosecution, as authorities move to determine full accountability for the incident.
