The Association of Igbo Town Unions (ASITU) has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene and halt the ongoing demolition of properties belonging to Igbo people in Lagos State.
In a statement issued in Umuahia, the group urged the Federal Government, the Minister of Works and Housing, and the Attorney-General of the Federation to prevail upon the Lagos State Government to end the demolitions and embrace a spirit of national unity and brotherhood.
ASITU President, Chief Emeka Diwe, described the relationship between the Igbo and Yoruba as “deeply intertwined,” warning that the demolitions risk damaging decades of inter-ethnic harmony.
He said, “Nigeria is dying slowly from the cancer of ethnic discrimination, selective justice, and constitutional violations. These demolitions must stop. The pattern of selective enforcement must end.”
The union further stressed that the affected properties are not illegal structures but legitimate investments — plazas, warehouses, and shops that sustain countless families and livelihoods.
