The European Union (EU) has reaffirmed its respect for Nigeria’s sovereignty, pledging continued partnership in peacebuilding, interfaith dialogue, and human rights protection.
EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Gautier Mignot, said this in Lagos while responding to U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent threat of sanctions over alleged anti-Christian violence.
“Our position is one of solidarity with Nigeria with victims of violence, authorities protecting citizens, and Nigerians who seek peaceful coexistence beyond ethnic and religious divides,” Mignot stated.
He emphasised that the EU’s stance is guided by its longstanding partnership with Nigeria, not by external influence, and reaffirmed support for ongoing peace and security initiatives.
