NLC General Secretary Emmanuel Ugboaja Dies at 60

The General Secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Emmanuel Ugboaja, has died at the age of 60 after a protracted illness.

His death was announced to members of the Congress’ National Executive Council (NEC) during a meeting in Enugu on Thursday.

NLC President, Joe Ajaero, reportedly read a letter from Ugboaja’s family informing the NEC of his death.

Ugboaja, a veteran trade unionist and lawyer, was appointed NLC General Secretary in August 2019.

Born on May 15, 1966, he obtained a law degree from the University of Calabar in 1987 and joined the trade union movement in 1993 after about four years in private legal practice.

He served as General Secretary of the National Union of Chemical, Footwear, Rubber, Leather and Non-Metallic Products Employees (NUCFRLANMPE) from 2000 to 2005.

Ugboaja was regarded as a prominent figure in Nigeria’s organised labour movement.
