The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to combating insecurity and reducing economic hardship, declaring that Nigeria will not surrender to terrorism, banditry, or criminal intimidation.
Speaking on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the National Inter-Denominational Church Service marking the 2026 Democracy Day celebration in Abuja, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, said the administration was aware of the challenges facing Nigerians and was working to alleviate them through improved service delivery and economic reforms.
Akume said the government shared in the pains of citizens and would intensify efforts to address socio-economic difficulties across the country. He also assured Nigerians that security agencies were receiving the necessary support to protect lives and secure the release of persons held captive.
“The government of Nigeria shall never succumb to terror, banditry or any form of criminal intimidation,” he said.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s 27 years of uninterrupted democratic rule since 1999, Akume paid tribute to pro-democracy activists who sacrificed for the restoration of civilian governance.
With the 2027 general elections approaching, he urged Nigerians, particularly youths, to reject violence, hate speech, misinformation, and political thuggery, while calling on religious leaders, traditional rulers, civil society groups, the media, and families to promote peace and national unity.
