The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has raised concerns over voter apathy and the spread of fake news ahead of the 2026 governorship election in Ekiti State.
Speaking during a media forum in Ado-Ekiti, INEC National Commissioner, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, said declining voter turnout remains a major threat to democracy, noting that participation in elections has dropped significantly over the years.
He disclosed that 66,664 new voters were registered in Ekiti between 2025 and 2026, bringing the state’s total registered voters to 1,059,360.

Haruna urged media organisations to promote voter participation and strengthen fact-checking efforts to curb misinformation.
Ekiti Resident Electoral Commissioner, Bunmi Omoseyindemi, also warned that fake news and misleading election reports could create tension and undermine public confidence in the electoral process.
Meanwhile, Ekiti NUJ Chairman, Kayode Babatuyi, reaffirmed the union’s commitment to ethical journalism and combating fake news ahead of the election.
