The Oyo State Police Command has dismissed reports claiming that students, pupils and teachers abducted during an attack on three schools in Oriire Local Government Area have been rescued.
The Command said the victims are still in captivity, while security agencies continue efforts to secure their release and arrest those behind the attack.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday in Ibadan.
According to the statement, rumours circulating about the rescue of the victims are false and misleading.
“The Oyo State Police Command wishes to inform the general public that the abducted students, pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area are yet to be released,” the statement said.
The police explained that joint security teams are working tirelessly to rescue the victims safely and bring the perpetrators to justice.
The Command urged residents to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information.
It warned that fake news and misinformation could create panic, increase tension and distract security operatives from ongoing rescue operations.
“The spread of fake news and misinformation only creates unnecessary panic, heightens tension, and diverts limited security resources that are critically needed for the ongoing operations,” the statement added.
The police assured residents that verified updates would be released as developments unfold.
The Command also advised members of the public seeking authentic information to contact the Police Public Relations Officer or the Command’s control room.
