Governor Hyacinth Alia has begun the evacuation of students of Benue origin studying at the University of Jos following the recent attack on Angwan Rukuba and nearby communities in Jos, Plateau State.
The evacuation, which began on Thursday, April 2, 2026, followed rising tension in Jos after the attack claimed several lives and heightened fears among residents.
The management of the University of Jos had earlier postponed first semester examinations and directed students in hostels and other residential areas to vacate the campus immediately from Thursday.

Governor Alia said the decision to evacuate the students was necessary to protect the lives and welfare of Benue indigenes, particularly young people studying far from home.
More than 600 students have already been transported back to Benue State, while additional buses have been sent to Jos to evacuate the remaining students and other indigenes willing to return home due to the tension in the city.
The governor said his administration would continue to place priority on the safety and welfare of Benue people.
He also disclosed that he is in talks with Caleb Mutfwang as efforts continue to identify those responsible for the attacks and restore calm in the state.
