The Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Blessing Agbebaku, has resigned from office amid an alleged plot by lawmakers to impeach him.
Agbebaku’s media aide, Ivy Ebojele, confirmed his resignation on Monday, August 17, 2026, saying details of the development would be made public later.

Agbebaku, who represents Owan West Constituency, was elected Speaker of the Eighth Assembly in June 2023.
His leadership faced growing tension in May 2024 after he suspended three lawmakers over an alleged plot to impeach him and other principal officers.
Following his resignation, Yekini Idiaye, representing Akoko-Edo Constituency I, emerged as the new Speaker.
Speaking with journalists after Monday’s plenary, Idiaye accused the former Speaker of corruption, poor leadership and repeatedly adjourning the Assembly without clear reasons.
He said the lawmakers had become dissatisfied with Agbebaku’s leadership, alleging that his style of administration was affecting the work of government.
“We are not happy with his leadership style. His leadership is poor and it has been drawing the work of the government backwards,” Idiaye said.
He added that the Assembly would support Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration and work to move Edo State forward.
