One Nigerian Army officer and a police officer were killed after troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA repelled a terrorist attack on a Forward Operating Base in Kaura Namoda Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
The Nigerian Army said troops also rescued nine abducted civilians while pursuing the fleeing attackers after the failed assault.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 8 Division, Lt. Col. Olaniyi Osoba, said the terrorists attempted to infiltrate the Forward Operating Base at Kasuwan Daji at about 1:40 a.m. on Saturday but were detected and engaged by troops.
According to the Army, the troops responded with coordinated firepower, inflicting heavy casualties on the attackers and forcing them to retreat before reinforcements launched a pursuit operation.
During the operation, soldiers rescued nine civilians allegedly abducted by the fleeing terrorists from nearby communities.
The Army confirmed that one Army officer and one police officer were killed in the exchange of fire, while two soldiers sustained gunshot wounds and were airlifted for treatment. The injured personnel are said to be in stable condition.
It added that troops have secured the area and are conducting follow-up operations to assess the terrorists’ losses and prevent further attacks.
The Army also dismissed online reports claiming six security personnel were killed, insisting that only one Army officer and one police officer lost their lives during the encounter.
It reaffirmed Operation FANSAN YAMMA’s commitment to sustaining offensive operations against terrorist groups and restoring security across Nigeria’s North-West.
