Co-hosts Mexico kicked off the 2026 FIFA World Cup in style with a commanding 2-0 victory over South Africa in an eventful Group A opener at the iconic Azteca Stadium.
Julián Quiñones handed El Tri the lead in the ninth minute after capitalising on a defensive error from South Africa, calmly finishing past goalkeeper Ronwen Williams to score the tournament’s first goal.

Raúl Jiménez sealed the victory in the 67th minute, rising highest to head home and double Mexico’s advantage as the hosts made the perfect start in front of their passionate supporters.

The match was also overshadowed by disciplinary issues, with South Africa finishing with nine men following the dismissals of Sphephelo Sithole and Themba Zwane. Mexico’s César Montes was also shown a red card in stoppage time, making it three send-offs in a fiery contest.
The result extends Mexico’s impressive unbeaten run in FIFA World Cup opening matches to eight games, with six wins and two draws, while South Africa face an uphill task in their bid to progress from Group A.
