At least 10 political parties have unveiled presidential candidates ahead of Nigeria’s January 16, 2027, general election, setting the stage for a highly contested race marked by opposition divisions and party factions.
President Bola Tinubu has secured the APC ticket for a second term, while several opposition parties have presented candidates through rival factions. Former President Goodluck Jonathan emerged from a PDP faction led by Kabiru Turaki, while Senator Sandy Onor was chosen by the Wike-backed PDP bloc.
In the ADC, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar secured the ticket of the David Mark-led faction, while Dumebi Kachikwu emerged from a rival camp. The SDP also produced separate candidates, with Adewole Adebayo and Abimbola Akeem Atanda representing opposing factions.
Other candidates include Peter Obi of the NDC, who has named Rabiu Kwankwaso as his running mate, AAC’s Omoyele Sowore, APM’s Seyi Makinde, ADP’s Aliyu Bin Abbas, Labour Party’s Chibuzo Okereke and PRP’s Donald Duke.
The emerging lineup highlights a fragmented opposition landscape as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
