World Press Freedom Day: NUJ Seeks Better Welfare, Transparency for Journalists

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Zone B, has called for better welfare, transparency, and stronger protection for journalists in Nigeria.

In a statement marking the 2026 World Press Freedom Day, NUJ Vice President, Zone B, Ronke Afebioye-Samo, said a free and financially stable media is key to peace, democracy, and national development.

She urged governments to improve journalists’ welfare, implement the Freedom of Information Act fully, and strengthen laws protecting media professionals from harassment and attacks.

The union also warned about the rise of disinformation and deepfakes driven by artificial intelligence, stressing the need to equip journalists with digital skills.

NUJ Zone B reaffirmed its commitment to promoting press freedom and building a stronger media sector in Nigeria.
