World Cup 2026: Iran Fight Back Twice to Secure Opening Draw

Iran showed resilience in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, twice coming from behind to secure a 2-2 draw against New Zealand in a thrilling Group G encounter in Los Angeles.

New Zealand struck first through Elijah Just in the seventh minute, but Iran responded in the 32nd minute when Ramin Rezaeian found the equaliser. Just restored New Zealand’s lead early in the second half with his second goal of the night, only for Mohammad Mohebi to level matters again in the 64th minute.

The match was played against a backdrop of political tensions and logistical challenges surrounding Iran’s participation in the tournament. Despite the distractions, the Iranians displayed determination and attacking intent, finishing strongly as both teams pushed for a winner.

New Zealand will feel they missed an opportunity to claim a historic World Cup victory after leading twice, but coach Darren Bazeley praised his side’s performance and belief on football’s biggest stage.

The draw leaves Group G finely balanced after the other group fixture between Belgium and Egypt also ended in a draw, meaning all four teams sit on one point after the opening round of matches.
