The family of slain corps member, Abdulsamad Jamiu, has dismissed the Nigerian Army’s claim that he died in crossfire during an anti-robbery operation in Dei-Dei, Abuja.
In a strongly worded statement, the family insisted the 24-year-old was shot inside his residence in the early hours of April 25, alleging that soldiers fired through his bedroom door around 2 a.m. while he was at home.
The Army, through the Guards Brigade, had earlier maintained that Jamiu was caught in a gun battle between troops and fleeing armed robbers after responding to a distress call.
However, the family described this account as “false and misleading,” arguing that evidence at the scene contradicts any claim of a shootout. They noted that only a single gunshot was heard, no weapons were recovered, and no suspects were identified.
They further alleged that soldiers gained access to the compound by scaling the fence, not through the gate, and later admitted at the scene that the killing was a mistake.
The family also raised concerns about alleged attempts to tamper with evidence, claiming vigilantes were instructed to clean up bloodstains.
Demanding justice, they called for an independent investigation, the prosecution of those involved, and a public apology from the military.
