Ebonyi Murder Case: NHRC Condemns ‘Barbaric’ Killing of Woman Over Property

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in Ebonyi State has renewed calls for justice for Ms Nnenna Onu, a 35-year-old woman allegedly murdered by relatives over her late father’s property.

Onu was reportedly killed in December 2021 at Amagu community in Onicha Local Government Area, with her body burnt beyond recognition. The incident was linked to a family dispute after she insisted on her right to inherit property despite having no male siblings.

A graduate of Public Administration from Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic, Onu and her family had earlier been forced out of their father’s home by relatives over the absence of a male heir.

The Nigeria Police Force arrested a suspect, Chidiebere Okoro, who has since been arraigned and remanded in custody in Abakaliki.

Speaking on the development, NHRC Ebonyi Coordinator, Christopher Okorie, condemned the prolonged delay in prosecuting the case, describing the circumstances surrounding Onu’s death as “barbaric.”

He said the commission had revived the case in 2026 after years of stagnation and was working with relevant stakeholders to ensure justice is served.

Meanwhile, the victim’s sister, Juliet Onu, appealed to Governor Francis Nwifuru to intervene, lamenting the family’s continued displacement and hardship since the incident.
