FMC Ikole Performs First Total Hip Replacement in Ekiti

The Federal Medical Centre Ikole-Ekiti has recorded a major milestone, becoming the first public hospital in Ekiti State to successfully perform a total hip replacement.

Chief Medical Director, Prof. Johnson Ogunlusi, disclosed this in Ikole-Ekiti, noting that the procedure marks a significant step in expanding specialist healthcare services within the state.

According to him, the hospital, established in mid-2024, has rapidly strengthened its clinical capacity. Within its first six months, it carried out four total knee replacement surgeries and has now successfully completed its first total hip replacement, with the patient reportedly discharged and recovering well.

Ogunlusi said the development reduces the need for residents to travel outside Ekiti or abroad for advanced orthopaedic procedures, aligning with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu to improve access to quality healthcare.

He added that the centre has grown from two consultants at inception to over 24 specialists, combining full-time and visiting experts, as it works towards becoming a leading public healthcare institution in Nigeria.
