Iranian state television has confirmed that Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was killed in coordinated airstrikes reportedly carried out by the United States and Israel. Iranian media said his daughter and grandchild also died in the attack.
The strikes targeted a fortified bunker within the leader’s palace compound in Tehran. Reports say the operation began around 9 a.m. local time, and his body was later recovered from the rubble. Satellite images show extensive damage at the site.
US President Donald Trump described the mission as successful, calling it “justice” in a post on Truth Social. The Israel Defense Forces said the assault also eliminated several senior Iranian defence officials, including Defence Minister Amir Nasirzadeh and Revolutionary Guard commander Mohammad Pakpour. Some reports suggest up to 40 high-ranking officials may have been killed, though this remains unconfirmed.

Iran earlier dismissed reports of the leader’s death before confirming it and announcing 40 days of national mourning. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had initially insisted he was alive.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the moment a “historic opportunity,” urging Iranians to rise up. President Trump warned that further strikes would continue if necessary.
Iran has reportedly launched retaliatory drone and missile attacks targeting US military bases in the Middle East. Tensions across the region remain high.
