Ekiti NUJ seeks audience with Oyebanji over journalists’ welfare

The Ekiti State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has appealed to Governor Biodun Oyebanji to grant its leadership an audience to address pressing welfare challenges facing journalists in the state.

The call was part of resolutions reached at the NUJ January 2026 congress held at the Dr Tai Oguntayo Hall, NUJ Press Centre, Ado-Ekiti.

In a communiqué signed by the council’s secretary, Mr O’Seun Ogunsakin, the union lamented poor welfare conditions, citing inadequate remuneration, unfavourable working environments and limited access to basic entitlements.

The congress said engagement with the governor had become necessary to foster a harmonious relationship between the state government and media practitioners and to enhance professionalism in the sector.

The NUJ also raised concern over recent fire outbreaks across Ekiti, urging residents to observe safety precautions, particularly in handling electrical appliances and flammable materials. It called on relevant agencies to intensify public enlightenment and strengthen rapid emergency response.

Ahead of the forthcoming governorship election, the union urged political parties and candidates to conduct peaceful campaigns in line with electoral laws, while advising voters to collect their Permanent Voter Cards and reject vote-buying.

Journalists were also advised to remain security-conscious and uphold ethical standards, including verification of information and avoidance of sensationalism during election coverage.

The union further appealed to Governor Oyebanji to fulfil his pledge to fix the leaking roof of the NUJ on-air chapel.
