The Ekiti State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has urged the state government and residents to take urgent steps to prevent flooding, following recent heavy rainfall that submerged roads and destroyed property in parts of Ado-Ekiti.
The call was made in a communiqué issued after the union’s June Congress held on Wednesday at the NUJ Press Centre in Ado-Ekiti.
The communiqué, signed by the council’s Secretary, Comrade O’Seun Ogunsakin, urged residents to stop dumping refuse in drainage channels, saying the practice contributes to blocked waterways and flooding.

The union also called on the state government to clear blocked drains and open waterways to allow the free flow of stormwater during the rainy season.
While sympathising with victims of the recent flooding, the NUJ warned against building on waterways, describing the practice as a major threat to lives, property and the environment.
Beyond flood prevention, the congress congratulated Governor Biodun Oyebanji on his re-election, describing the governorship poll as free, fair and credible. It also called for stronger security across the state and urged parents, schools and government to address the growing decline in moral values among students.
