Mexico Beat South Korea to Reach World Cup Knockout Stage

Mexico became the first team to secure a place in the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a hard-fought 1–0 victory over South Korea in their Group A clash on Thursday.

After a tense and cagey first half with limited clear chances, the breakthrough came early in the second half when Luis Romo capitalised on a costly error from South Korea goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu to score the decisive goal in the 50th minute.

Mexico looked sharper after taking the lead and nearly doubled their advantage, but South Korea stayed in the contest. The Asian side pushed late for an equaliser, forcing Mexican goalkeeper Raúl Rangel into a crucial double save in the closing stages to preserve the clean sheet.

The result means Mexico now sits top of Group A with six points from two matches, guaranteeing progression to the Round of 32 and ensuring massive momentum heading into their final group game against Czechia. South Korea, meanwhile, still has work to do and must get a result in their final match against South Africa to keep knockout hopes alive.

For Mexico manager Javier Aguirre, the win marks a significant milestone, as El Tri topped a World Cup group for the first time since 2002—also under his leadership.
