United Bank for Africa (UBA) has debunked viral claims alleging that its Group Chairman, Tony Elumelu, divorced his wife following a purported DNA test involving his children.
The bank described the allegation—circulated on X—as false, defamatory, and malicious.
In a statement issued Sunday, UBA’s Group Head of Brand, Marketing and Corporate Communications, Alero Ladipo, said the claims were “entirely fabricated” and aimed at misleading the public while damaging the chairman’s reputation.
She revealed that the matter has been reported to law enforcement authorities, leading to the arrest of three individuals allegedly linked to the creation and spread of the false information. Those in custody include Kingsley Akunemeihe (also known as @Directorkem), Chigozie Success Ihebom, and John Surpruchi Nwanorue (@problemchimky).
UBA added that investigations are ongoing to identify and prosecute other individuals involved in originating or amplifying the claims.
The bank also issued a cease-and-desist directive to those circulating the content, demanding its immediate removal and the preservation of all related digital records for potential legal proceedings.
It warned that failure to comply could result in defamation suits, claims for damages, and other legal actions.
UBA reaffirmed its commitment to protecting its corporate reputation and the personal integrity of its chairman, vowing to pursue both civil and criminal remedies against all responsible parties.
