The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Joash Amupitan, has cautioned the African Democratic Congress against proceeding with its planned congresses and national convention without the commission’s supervision.
Speaking on Arise TV on Friday, Amupitan said the move could trigger serious legal consequences, stressing that INEC’s stance is based on a subsisting court order—not arbitrary action.
The warning follows the party’s insistence on holding its convention despite the commission’s derecognition of a faction linked to David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola.
According to the INEC boss, the court had expressly directed parties to refrain from actions that could undermine ongoing proceedings, including conducting congresses or conventions while related motions remain unresolved.
He warned that defying such orders could invalidate electoral victories, citing past cases in Zamfara and Plateau states where courts overturned results, with runners-up declared winners.
While noting that the party is free to make its decisions, Amupitan maintained that INEC would not be drawn into avoidable electoral disputes.
