The African Democratic Congress has accused the All Progressives Congress of plotting to impose a one-party state ahead of the 2027 general elections, alleging that the Independent National Electoral Commission is being used to weaken opposition parties.
Speaking in Abuja on Thursday, ADC National Chairman, David Mark, condemned INEC’s decision to delist key party officials, including himself and Rauf Aregbesola, describing the move as unlawful and biased. He also called for the immediate removal of INEC Chairman, Professor Amupitan Joash.
INEC had said its action followed a court directive to maintain the status quo pending the resolution of an ongoing leadership dispute within the party.
The ADC has been embroiled in a leadership crisis since 2025, following the emergence of a rival National Working Committee led by Mark, amid disputes over the tenure of former chairman Ralph Nwosu. The crisis has led to multiple court cases and uncertainty within the party.
Mark alleged that recent developments were part of a broader attempt to sideline opposition voices and pave the way for Bola Ahmed Tinubu to emerge as the sole viable candidate in 2027, despite worsening economic hardship and insecurity.
He further accused INEC of misinterpreting the court’s directive on maintaining the status quo, insisting that the commission’s actions have undermined the party’s leadership structure and democratic process.
The ADC chairman warned that the party would proceed with its scheduled activities, including upcoming congresses and convention, maintaining that INEC’s involvement is not legally mandatory.
