Terror Sponsors Known but Not Named — Buratai Speaks

A former Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, has said he cannot be held responsible for the non-disclosure of individuals allegedly financing terrorism in Nigeria, insisting that relevant authorities already know those involved.

Speaking on Politics Today on Channels Television, the retired lieutenant general stated that security agencies have reasons for withholding the names, even though the suspects remain within society.

Buratai also clarified that the rehabilitation of repentant Boko Haram members was a government policy, not a military initiative, noting that surrendered fighters were handed over to appropriate agencies after a 2016 deadline.

The former ambassador expressed concern over persistent insecurity, calling for improved intelligence gathering and increased recruitment of security personnel.

Despite repeated assurances since 2021 by the Federal Government that terrorism financiers would be exposed, their identities remain undisclosed, a situation that continues to attract criticism from civil society groups and security experts who argue that transparency is key to ending impunity.
