Presidents’ Day: US Embassy, Consulate Suspend Services in Nigeria

The United States Embassy in Abuja and the United States Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Monday, February 16, 2026, in observance of Presidents’ Day.

The mission announced the temporary shutdown in a notice posted on its official X page on Sunday.

Presidents’ Day, observed annually on the third Monday of February, was originally established to honour the birth of George Washington but has since evolved into a celebration of all American presidents and their leadership.

The embassy noted that the holiday also acknowledges the global influence of US presidents. It added that Washington created the “Badge of Military Merit,” which later became the Purple Heart and still bears his image.
