Thirty-five-year-old Jennifer Atsar, mother of 16-year-old Sesugh Atsar, has demanded justice following the alleged killing of her son by an operative of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in Makurdi, Benue State.
Speaking in an interview, Atsar described her late son as a hardworking student and apprentice who supported the family through menial jobs while learning furniture-making and attending school.
She disputed claims that Sesugh was involved in criminal activities, insisting he had no history of crime and was focused on helping his siblings and building a better future.
According to her, the teenager had earlier informed her that EFCC operatives detained him but later released him after finding nothing incriminating, although his phone was allegedly withheld and he was asked to produce N100,000 before it would be returned.
Atsar said she was later informed that her son was shot after he and a friend responded to a summons from individuals alleged to be EFCC operatives staying at a hotel in the area. She claimed witnesses told her that he was chased and shot at close range after attempting to flee upon seeing an armed officer.
The grieving mother said she had been unable to see her son’s remains, alleging that the EFCC was still holding the body. She also rejected allegations reportedly made against the teenager, including claims of fraud, cultism and drug-related activities, describing them as attempts to justify the killing.
Calling for accountability, Atsar urged authorities to release her son’s body for burial and ensure that anyone responsible for his death faces justice.
“I want justice for my son. The officer who shot him must face the consequences,” she said.
