INEC Investigates Alleged Unauthorised Access to Voter Database

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has begun investigating allegations of unauthorised access to its Continuous Voter Registration database following the publication of voter information linked to actor and politician Emeka Ike.

In a statement on Tuesday, INEC said preliminary findings showed there was no external breach or hacking of its systems. According to the commission, the information was accessed using valid credentials assigned to personnel involved in the ongoing voter registration exercise and was allegedly released without authorisation.

INEC said it had identified the user account involved and was questioning relevant personnel. The commission stressed that the incident concerned a single voter record and did not compromise the personal data of over 90 million registered voters.

The Department of State Services has also launched a separate investigation, while INEC pledged to take legal action against anyone found culpable.
