Akpabio Assures Workers of Better Welfare, Living Wage Push

President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has assured Nigerian workers that the National Assembly is actively addressing their economic hardships through targeted legislation.

In a message marking the International Workers’ Day 2026, issued in Abuja by his media aide Eseme Eyiboh, Akpabio acknowledged the rising cost of living and mounting workplace pressures faced by workers nationwide.

He said the 10th National Assembly remains committed to policies that promote a living wage, safer working environments, pension reforms, and expanded job opportunities.

Akpabio pointed to the passage of the new National Minimum Wage Act and ongoing welfare initiatives as evidence of the Senate’s resolve to improve labour conditions.

The Senate President also urged employers across both public and private sectors to prioritise workers’ welfare, stressing that improved working conditions are key to higher productivity.

He further commended organised labour, including the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, pledging sustained collaboration to ensure workers’ voices remain central in policymaking.

Akpabio described Nigerian workers as the backbone of the nation’s economy and democracy, recognising their contributions across sectors.
