Afe Babalola honoured as 2026 Icon Man of the Year for national impact

Renowned lawyer and founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti, Afe Babalola has been named Triangle International Magazine’s 2026 Icon Man of the Year in recognition of his contributions to national development.

In a letter signed by the magazine’s Chief Executive Officer, Olufemi Salako, the publication said its nomination and selection committees unanimously chose Babalola for his leadership, visionary impact and lasting contributions to Nigeria and Africa.

The magazine said the award is reserved for individuals whose lifetime achievements reflect exceptional leadership and transformative influence. It cited Babalola’s accomplishments in legal practice, educational innovation, philanthropy and institution building, describing his work as a model of service and development.

Reacting to the honour in Ado-Ekiti, Babalola said he felt “on top of the world,” noting that the recognition reflects the impact of his lifelong commitment to education.

He said his decision to establish Afe Babalola University was inspired by his humble background and limited access to formal education while growing up.

Babalola said the university’s achievements and the success of its students have become his greatest source of fulfilment, adding that the institution has consistently ranked among Nigeria’s top universities.
