The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has called on the Federal Government to adopt practical measures to address Nigeria’s worsening insecurity, unreliable power supply, infrastructure gaps, and persistent challenges in the health and education sectors.
The appeal was made during the union’s 54th National Executive Council (NEC) meeting and award ceremony hosted by Ekiti State University in Ado-Ekiti. SSANU National President, Muhamed Ibrahim, strongly condemned the surge in killings, kidnappings, and destruction of property linked to banditry.
He stressed the urgency of rebuilding national infrastructure, particularly ensuring stable electricity and improved security, noting that these are critical to restoring public confidence and offering citizens a viable future.
Ibrahim further warned that rising insecurity — including terrorism, banditry, kidnappings, and communal clashes — continues to undermine the education sector, leaving both students and lecturers operating under constant fear.

In his remarks, SSANU EKSU Chairman, Azeez Temidayo Aguda, highlighted achievements recorded at the institution, particularly in staff welfare, promotions, and infrastructure. He attributed these gains to effective collaboration between the university management and union leadership.
Leaders of sister unions; Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), and Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), commended the Vice-Chancellor, Joseph Ayodele, for prioritising staff welfare and pledged sustained collaboration to improve conditions for university workers nationwide.
Declaring the meeting open, Ayodele acknowledged SSANU’s role in policy advocacy and staff development, while calling for innovative approaches to address the challenges facing Nigeria’s education system.
The event also featured award presentations to outstanding members, including the Vice-Chancellor, the university registrar, and the Nigeria Labour Congress Chairman, Olusola Kolapo.
More than 200 SSANU members from across the country attended the two-day NEC meeting.
