Defence Minister Badaru Resigns Citing Health Concerns

Defence Minister Mohammed Badaru has stepped down from office with immediate effect, following a formal notification to President Bola Tinubu dated December 1.

Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga confirmed the resignation on Monday, stating that Badaru relinquished his position on health grounds. President Tinubu has accepted the decision and expressed appreciation for Badaru’s service.

Presidency sources indicate that the President is expected to forward the name of a successor to the Senate within the week.

Badaru, 63, previously served two terms as governor of Jigawa State between 2015 and 2023 before his appointment as Minister of Defence on August 21, 2023. His exit coincides with the administration’s declaration of a national security emergency, with further details anticipated soon.
