Four people were killed and ten others injured when gunfire erupted at a family gathering in Stockton, California, on Saturday night in what authorities believe may have been a targeted attack.

The shooting occurred just before 6 p.m. inside a banquet hall northeast of San Francisco, according to Heather Brent, spokesperson for the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office. Victims, ranging from juveniles to adults, were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Brent confirmed that fourteen people were struck by gunfire, four fatally. She noted that details remain limited but early evidence points toward a deliberate assault. “Investigators are exploring all possibilities at this time,” she said.

In a statement on social media, the sheriff’s office said detectives are working to unravel the events that led to the attack and urged anyone with information or video footage to contact authorities immediately. No suspect has yet been identified.

California Governor Gavin Newsom has been briefed on the incident, his office confirmed.

The attack adds to a growing national toll. According to the Gun Violence Archive, the Stockton shooting marks one of 504 mass shootings recorded in the United States so far this year, defined as incidents in which four or more people are shot.
