Several people were trapped after a two-storey building collapsed at 54 Cole Street, near Cemetery Bus Stop, in the Oyingbo area of Lagos in the early hours of Monday.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service said the incident occurred around 12:20 a.m., prompting a swift response from the Sari-Iganmu Fire Station.
According to the agency’s Director, Margaret Adeseye, the building had earlier been marked “distressed” before it gave way while residents were still inside.
“So far, 15 victims, seven men, four women, and four children have been rescued with varying degrees of injury and taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Ebute-Metta, and the General Hospital, Odan,” Adeseye stated, adding that rescue operations were ongoing.
Building collapses have remained a recurring tragedy in Lagos, often attributed to weak enforcement of building standards, substandard materials, and poor supervision. Similar incidents in Ikoyi (2021) and Yaba (2025) claimed several lives.
