EKIRS, NANS Partner To Curb Illegal Use Of Union’s Number Plates

The Ekiti State Internal Revenue Service (EKIRS) has partnered with the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), South West Zone to curb the illegal use of the association’s number plates on vehicles.

This collaboration followed the recent announcement made by the ministry on the road tax enforcement involving the unauthorized use of NANS number plates.

This was contained in a communique issued at the end of the meeting involving NANS, Joint Campus Committee (JCC), Ekiti axis and the NANS Southwest (Zone D) and jointly signed by all parties.

NANS, who apologised for their overaction to the publication, passed a vote of confidence on EKIRS for its professionalism, transparency and commitment to peace.

The communique reads, “The leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Joint Campus Committee (JCC), Ekiti Axis, and the NANS Southwest (Zone D) Coordinator have successfully concluded a high-level engagement with the Ekiti State Internal Revenue Service (EKIRS) on the recent publication concerning the unauthorised use of NANS number plates.

“Following a constructive and frank deliberation on Tuesday, 28th May 2025, the following resolutions were reached:

“Clarification and Apology: The EKIRS Chairman officially apologised to NANS, clarifying that the association and its legitimate members were not the targets of the referenced public announcement. The confusion was attributed to a lack of prior engagement. The executives of the NANS also apologised to the Executive Chairman of EKIRS for their overreaction to the publication.

“Security-Driven Clarification: EKIRS reaffirmed that the notice was issued purely out of security concerns, aimed at curbing impersonation and the fraudulent use of institutional identifiers such as NANS number plates.

“Commitment to Collaboration: Both parties agreed to develop a joint verification system and maintain an updated database of authorised number plate holders to prevent future misuse.

“Vote of Confidence: NANS Southwest passed a vote of confidence on the leadership of EKIRS, commending their professionalism, transparency, and commitment to peace.

“Ongoing Stakeholder Dialogue: A mutual commitment was made to enhance communication, consultation, and cooperation between NANS and EKIRS to avoid future misunderstandings. NANS agreed to forward a comprehensive database of all authorised NANS number plate users in Ekiti State to EKIRS.

“The meeting concluded in an atmosphere of mutual respect and understanding. NANS Ekiti and the Southwest Zone reaffirm their readiness to collaborate with EKIRS and other state institutions to promote youth engagement, civic responsibility, and security”.
