
Some unidentified gunmen have carried out a series of daring pirate attacks along the waterways in Rivers state abducting at least 16 people in separate incidents on Tuesday, May 6, 2025.
The first attack which occurred around Borokiri near Port Harcourt saw three out of five passengers forcibly abducted from a cargo boat, with an elderly passenger and the boat driver both ordered to disembark.
A second ambush near Okrika resulted in 13 kidnappings—marking a repeat for the boat’s operator, who had faced a similar attack in March. A third incident near Tourist Beach involved pirates seizing an empty speedboat but no passengers.
The Rivers State Police Command’s spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko confirmed the abductions while assuring that rescue efforts are ongoing.
