Do Kwon Jailed 15 Years Over $40bn TerraUSD & Luna Token Scam

A US court has handed cryptocurrency magnate Do Kwon a 15-year prison sentence, closing a saga that erased $40 billion in investor wealth and rattled global digital-asset markets.

The Terraform Labs founder, who pleaded guilty in New York after a manhunt that swept across Asia and Europe, remains wanted in South Korea, where additional fraud charges await him.

Kwon, 34, had built his empire on TerraUSD, a so-called stablecoin he touted as the future of finance, and its sister token, Luna. Their meteoric rise drew billions in capital, rapturous praise in South Korea, and even earned him a place on Forbes’ 30 Under 30 Asia list. But in May 2022, the two tokens collapsed into a death spiral, a crash experts describe as a pyramid structure masked by hype—one that obliterated life savings.

He slipped out of South Korea before the implosion, then drifted across borders until March 2023, when he was arrested in Montenegro carrying a forged Costa Rican passport. Extradited to the United States last year, he now confronts the full weight of the law.

Prosecutors said Kwon engineered “elaborate schemes” to mislead investors, inflate token values, and draw in major American firms. At their height, TerraUSD and Luna commanded more than $50 billion in market value. After the collapse, investigators say he sought “political protection,” even telling an associate his plan was to “tell them to fuck off.”

Beyond the prison term, the court ordered him to forfeit more than $19 million in illicit gains. US authorities indicated he may eventually serve part of his sentence in South Korea, but only after completing at least half in the United States.

Kwon’s dramatic ascent and fall now stand alongside the likes of Elizabeth Holmes—another empire built on promises, undone by its own illusion.
