The death of a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Victoria Ariyo, in Abeokuta, Ogun State, has triggered a police investigation amid allegations surrounding the circumstances leading to her demise.
Ariyo, who was serving in Abeokuta South Local Government Area, reportedly died from complications following a terminated pregnancy. She was subsequently buried at Kobape Cemetery along the Kobape-Sagamu Road.
Her death comes barely a month after another corps member, Adeleye Mary, who served in the same LGA, was found dead under unclear circumstances. Mary was attached to Ogun State Television (OGTV) as her place of primary assignment.
Sources indicated that both corps members were friends, with Mary discovered lifeless in her residence near her workplace, while the cause of her death remains unknown.
In Ariyo’s case, allegations have emerged linking the Local Government Inspector (LGI) for Abeokuta South, Abass Olalekan, to the events preceding her death. He was reportedly arrested by the police over claims of a romantic relationship with the deceased, which allegedly resulted in the pregnancy.
A police source confirmed that Olalekan is currently in custody at the state command headquarters in Eleweran, noting that the development raises concerns about the propriety of such relationships.
Authorities, however, clarified that there is no connection between Ariyo’s death and the earlier incident involving Mary.
The Ogun State Police Command confirmed that investigations into Ariyo’s death are ongoing, though it did not provide details on the reported arrest or allegations.
Efforts to reach NYSC officials in the state for comments were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
