Edafe Under Fire Over ‘Sexual’ Reply to Rinu Oduala Amid Ozoro Assault Outrage

The spokesperson of the Delta State Police Command, Bright Edafe, has come under intense criticism after making a controversial remark to activist Rinu Oduala on social media, widely condemned as inappropriate and unprofessional.

The backlash followed viral videos showing women being chased, stripped, and molested during a festival in Ozoro, Delta State—an incident that has sparked nationwide outrage.

Reacting earlier, Edafe confirmed that the police had launched an investigation, quoting the Commissioner of Police, Aina Adesola, as condemning the act and assuring that perpetrators would be brought to justice. He also called on witnesses to assist ongoing inquiries.

However, Oduala—known for her role in the #EndSARS protests—criticised the response as insufficient, accusing authorities of delay in making arrests.

In a reply that quickly went viral, Edafe wrote: “Whenever I issue a statement, it turns you on. Why if I may ask?”

The comment, widely interpreted as a sexual innuendo directed at a female activist raising concerns over sexual violence, triggered swift condemnation across social media.

Many Nigerians accused the police spokesman of trivialising a serious issue and responding to legitimate criticism with a crude remark. Several users described the statement as a reflection of poor judgment and a lack of professionalism expected of a law enforcement official.

Public figures also weighed in, including reality TV star Natacha Akide, who criticised the response as indicative of deeper societal problems, particularly regarding attitudes toward sexual violence.

The controversy comes amid heightened anger over the Ozoro incident, which occurred in Isoko North Local Government Area. Disturbing footage from Friday, March 20, showed women crying for help as they were publicly harassed and assaulted by groups of men.
