The University of Lagos has unveiled a N140 million alternative power project for its Faculty of Arts to guarantee uninterrupted electricity during national grid outages.
The initiative, titled “Light Up Faculty of Arts University of Lagos,” was launched on Saturday by the UNILAG Alumni Association and funded by philanthropist Tunde Fanimokun.
National Secretary of the association, Francis Shonubi, said the idea was conceived during the faculty’s celebration in October, noting that students often struggle to study during power cuts.

The project, which includes solar panels and inverters, is expected to be completed within three weeks and will power classrooms and common areas to support evening learning.
Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Ilupeju Mudashiru, said the faculty’s high electricity demand — driven by multiple lifts, over 40 classrooms per floor and numerous offices — makes it difficult for the university generator to cope during outages.
Fanimokun said the intervention is part of a broader educational support drive that has benefited about 12 universities nationwide, describing it as a commitment to giving back.
The project marks a significant boost to alumni-driven infrastructure support, enhancing safety and academic productivity within the faculty
