2026 World Cup: US Embassy Expands Visa Appointments for Ghanaians

The United States Embassy in Accra has opened thousands of additional non-immigrant visa appointment slots, many available immediately, to ease travel ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, will run from June 11 to July 19, 2026, and has triggered a surge in visa applications.

In a statement posted on its X handle on Tuesday, the embassy urged Ghanaians planning to attend the tournament to apply early if they do not already hold a valid U.S. visa.

“The U.S. Embassy in Accra has opened thousands of additional non-immigrant visa appointment slots, many available now. Embassy Accra continues to process non-immigrant visa applications,” the statement read.

The announcement comes a day before January 21, 2026, when the U.S. Department of State is expected to pause immigrant visa issuances for nationals of 75 countries, including Ghana and Nigeria, over concerns about high public assistance usage.

However, the suspension does not affect non-immigrant visas such as tourist and business visas, which will continue to be processed normally.
