Former U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to send American troops into Nigeria “guns-a-blazing” if the government fails to stop the killing of Christians by Islamist extremists.
Posting on Truth Social, Trump warned that the U.S. would suspend all aid to Nigeria and could “wipe out” the perpetrators. He described the country as “disgraced” and claimed Christianity was facing an “existential threat.”
A day earlier, he had declared Nigeria a “Country of Particular Concern,” saying, “Thousands of Christians are being killed. Radical Islamists are responsible for this mass slaughter.” Trump also directed U.S. lawmakers to investigate the crisis.
Reacting, President Bola Tinubu dismissed the allegations, saying Nigeria remains committed to religious freedom and tolerance.
“The description of Nigeria as intolerant does not reflect our reality,” Tinubu said. “Since 2023, our administration has engaged both Christian and Muslim leaders while tackling insecurity affecting citizens of all faiths.”
He reaffirmed that Nigeria’s democracy guarantees freedom of religion and pledged continued cooperation with the U.S. and international partners to protect communities of all beliefs.
