The World Health Organization (WHO) expressed regret over President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw the United States from the global health body.
In a statement posted on its official X handle, the WHO highlighted the vital role of the US in shaping its initiatives since the organization’s founding in 1948 and expressed hope that Trump would reconsider his decision.
Trump, inaugurated as the 47th US President on Monday, signed several executive orders, including one that terminates US membership in the World Health Organization (WHO)
The organization emphasized its long-standing partnership with the United States, noting collaborative efforts that have saved countless lives and addressed significant health threats over the past seven decades.
The WHO stated, “Together, we ended smallpox, and together we have brought polio to the brink of eradication.” It also mentioned that American contributions have been instrumental in implementing extensive reforms aimed at enhancing accountability and effectiveness within the organization.
In response to Trump’s remarks about perceived inequities in funding compared to China, the WHO reiterated its commitment to constructive dialogue and maintaining its partnership with the US for global health benefits.
During his first term, Trump had previously announced intentions to withdraw from the WHO, accusing it of being overly influenced by China during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic.
This decision was reversed under President Joe Biden’s administration. In his new executive order, Trump directed federal agencies to halt future funding to the WHO and to seek alternative partners for necessary health activities previously supported by the organization.
